<DIV>Gil Parker, the writer of the email below, is a long time friend of my wife
and myself. A good person.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>For many years he has been trying to get a walking trail from one end of
the Island to the other built. He is now working very hard for this ( if you
build it, they will come ) goal.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>As the trail will often parallel the ITS system, it would seem that an
obvious relationship between hams and the trail builders should be established.
There will be activities this coming year in connection to the building of the
trail, and with the remoteness of much of it, I think that ham radio would be
good for a safety as well as a public relations aspect for both groups.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>I would like to establish contacts between ITS and VISTA to this end. If
you wish to ask me any questions please contact me. I will attempt to give you
any help you wish. </DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>I see this only as a "win-win" situation for both organizations.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>What are your views?</DIV>

<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>PS Have a look at the web page of VISTA - perhaps a quick look at your
sites in relation to the proposed trail could give everyone an idea just what
coverage might be possible.</DIV>
<DIV>Would really be good if you have, or can get, RF coverage maps.</DIV>

Robin.<BR> It was in 2008 that Joe Young and I discussed the
VISpine and how the amateur radio people might be involved. We are now a
non-profit Society (called VISTA) with tax deductible status. 2010 will be
very active in the promotion of the actual trail, connecting many existing
ones together to form a continuous, non-motorized, multi-use trail from end to
end of the Island.<BR><BR> A major part of 2010 activities
will be the "VI Spine Relay" where hikers and runners will do existing
wilderness trails and connect these segments using bikes on normal roads. You
can see a general map of the route on our website, <A
class=moz-txt-link-abbreviated href="http://www.vispine.ca">www.vispine.ca</A>
and I'll attach a jpg of our section key map. One area of the route of the
Relay which might need help from amateur radio people is the Beaufort Range
west of Parksville and north east of Port Alberni. I'll attach a jpg of that
section, which connects Alberni to Cumberland.<BR><BR> It
would be interesting to know how the amateur radio group might be involved in
our VI Spine Relay and in the overall development of the VI Spine trail
itself.<BR> <BR> Thank you,

While I have not gone public with the "Spine" idea yet, I will
do so soon. So I attach a rough map, with the provision that an alternate
route might go through Strathcona Park and reconnect north of the park. I
also attach a brief description of the Spine idea, which will go through
many versions before final. <BR> Thanks for the
interest. Gil <BR><BR>Gil

<BLOCKQUOTE type="cite">Hi Joe, <BR> At the moment I don't
have a sendable map, but will have to do so soon. The route will be
Victoria, Shawnigan, Youbou, Port Alberni, Cumberland (or west of Comox
Lake), Mount Washington, then Mount Victoria, Mount Schoen, and west of
Port McNeill and Port Hardy to the north coast at a point 50 km east of
Cape Scott, then over to the Cape. I'd be very interested in talking to
the amateurs' group a little later. I'm calling the trail Vancouver
Island Spine. The TA is for Trails Association and that will eventually be
a non-profit organization, VISTA. <BR>
Cheers, Gil <BR><BR>
